Strolling along Wood-knot Beach,
the oak bloke and his mahog' dog
came across a harbinger of a hand -
interrupting the grain of beech sand.

What could it mean?
Is it kind....or kind of mean?
Does the pining palm
mean any harm?
Could it be benign?
Or is it sinister and malign?

Who knows?
Perhaps the dog nose.
With its snarling snout
it tries to sniff an answer out.

They have no eyes, you see?

Looks like the golden wood-knot sun
would be setting soon
on this wood-knot scene.

Were it not for the alarm
incited by this pining palm,
this gnarled driftwood dog,
instead of snarling and whining, would be calm,
and would drift along on its merry way.

Were it not for the pining hand
in the wood-knot sand,
the wood-knot scene
would be serene!

But still, what does it all mean?
